About the Project
The Center of Excellence for High-Performance Computing is one of the most significant large-scale projects supporting the research and educational process in the Kingdom. The high-performance computer (Aziz) at King Abdulaziz University is considered one of the world's leading high-performance computers. It is the first of its kind in Saudi universities and also at the level of governmental and private sectors in the Kingdom. The university has implemented the center in collaboration with the Japanese company Fujitsu to be one of the world's prominent supercomputers. The High-Performance Computing Center aims, through the construction of this computer, to achieve the following objectives:
• Promoting the culture of high-performance computing within the university and the academic community in the Kingdom in general.
• Active scientific collaboration with major universities, specialized global centers, and researchers specializing in high-performance computing.
• Supporting government sectors by providing the capability to use (Aziz) to execute projects that require high computational power.
• Activating the use of high-performance computing technologies in scientific research.
• Supporting projects on climate change studies, water desalination, genetic mapping research, aviation studies, and other distinguished research projects that serve all areas of development in the Kingdom.
The center also aims to develop outstanding Saudi personnel through an ambitious training program to train technicians on how to manage systems, hardware, and software, and to train researchers on how to use the system and submit their scientific problems for resolution. Additionally, it includes specialized training for researchers on programming methods and using applications specific to high-performance computing.
